Overview

What repairs, glass & sliders involves

Not everything needs replacing. A great deal of the work we are called out to is repair: a misted sealed unit in an otherwise sound frame, a door that has dropped on its hinges, a handle that no longer engages the locking gear, a patio slider that drags across the track.

We carry out these repairs on UPVC and aluminium windows and doors, including products we did not originally supply. Because we install this equipment week in and week out, we know which parts are worth replacing and which frames are genuinely past economic repair.

That honesty matters. If a repair will give you years more service, that is what we will recommend. If the frame is distorted or the hardware is obsolete and a repair will simply fail again, we will tell you that too and quote replacement instead.

Who this is for

  • Misted or condensated double glazing in sound frames
  • Doors that have dropped, stick or no longer lock cleanly
  • Sliding doors and windows running on worn gear
  • Broken handles, hinges, letterplates and locking mechanisms
  • Landlords needing fast turnaround between tenancies
  • Anyone quoted for full replacement who wants a second opinion

Why it matters

What happens if it is left alone

A misted unit is a failed unit. The insulating cavity has been lost, so the window is no longer doing the job it was installed to do, and you are paying for that in heating every month it stays in.

A door that will not lock without lifting or shoving is a security risk and, in many cases, a problem with your insurance. Multi-point locking that does not fully engage leaves a door that looks locked but is not.

Worn running gear damages what it runs on. Replace flattened rollers and the door is fine; leave them and the track itself wears, which turns a cheap repair into a replacement.

Common mistakes we are called in to fix

  • Living with a window that has to be slammed, which accelerates wear on every part of the mechanism.
  • Buying generic hardware that does not match the original gearing and fails again within months.
  • Replacing an entire window because one sealed unit has misted.
  • Leaving a dropped door until the frame itself is damaged by the sagging leaf.

Our process

How we run the job, step by step

  1. Step 1

    Free survey

We visit, measure and look at the existing openings, lintels, cills and reveals. The survey is free and carries no obligation.

  2. Step 2

    Specification and quotation

You get one clear written quotation covering frames, glass, hardware, fitting, making good and certification; no hidden extras added later.

  3. Step 3

    Manufacture

Your frames are made to the surveyed sizes in UPVC or aluminium, with your chosen colours, glazing specification and hardware finishes.

  4. Step 4

    Installation

Our own installers fit the job. The work area is sheeted up and protected, materials are kept tidy and debris is cleared away each day.

  5. Step 5

    Making good

All making good is completed internally and externally, so the finished opening looks right from both sides before we leave.

  6. Step 6

    Certification and aftercare

You receive a FENSA certificate for replacement glazing, full product care advice and a 10-year comprehensive insurance-backed guarantee.

Benefits

What you actually get

Lower cost than replacement

Where the frames are sound, repairing is a fraction of the cost of new windows or doors.

Fast to resolve

Most repairs are a single visit once the parts or units are in, with little disruption to the house.

Restores performance

A new sealed unit restores the insulation the window was designed to deliver.

Security back to standard

Correctly matched locking gear and hardware brings a door back to the security level it was made for.

Honest assessment

We tell you when a repair is not worth doing, instead of taking the money twice.

Experienced hands

The same in-house installers who fit new work carry out the repairs, with the trade counter behind them for parts.

In detail

Repairs, glass & sliders: the detail

Replacement sealed units

Misting between the panes means the seal has failed and the unit needs replacing. The frame is usually fine. We measure the unit, order to size and swap it, restoring the insulation and the clear view without touching the frame.

Upgrades are worth considering while the unit is being changed: acoustic glass on a road-facing window, obscure glass in a bathroom, toughened glass where a location is now classed as critical, or a better thermal specification throughout.

Hardware and locking

Handles, hinges, friction stays, espagnolette gearing, multi-point locks, cylinders, letterplates and door closers all wear out over time. Matching replacement parts to the original system is what makes a repair last, and it is where generic parts bought online usually let people down.

Adjustment is often part of the answer. Doors and windows move slightly as buildings settle, and a properly adjusted leaf takes the strain off the whole mechanism.

Sliders and running gear

Sliding patio doors and sliding sashes run on rollers that carry the full weight of the moving pane. When they flatten, the door drags and the track begins to suffer. Replacing sliders and cleaning out the track restores the glide and protects the frame.

If a track is already damaged we will say so. At that point replacing the door is usually the more sensible spend, and we will quote both so you can decide.

Repair or replace?

The test is straightforward. If the frame is square, sound and not distorted, and parts are available, repair is the right answer. If the frame has moved, the profile has degraded or the system is obsolete, a repair buys months rather than years and replacement is the honest recommendation.

We will always tell you which situation you are in, and if it is replacement, the same 10-year comprehensive insurance-backed guarantee and FENSA certification apply to the new installation.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you fix misted double glazing without replacing the window?

Yes. In almost all cases only the sealed unit needs replacing. The frame, hardware and trims stay exactly as they are, and it costs a fraction of a new window.

How much do window and door repairs cost?

It depends on the part and the number of items. Repairs are quoted individually, and we will always compare the repair cost against replacement so you can see which makes sense.

Do you repair windows you did not install?

Yes. We repair UPVC and aluminium windows and doors from other suppliers, subject to parts being available for the system in question.

How quickly can you attend?

Call us Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm and we will arrange a visit and confirm timings with you directly. We do not advertise a response-time promise we cannot keep to every customer.

My door will not lock unless I lift the handle hard, what is wrong?

Usually the leaf has dropped slightly so the locking points no longer align with their keeps. That is often an adjustment and a hinge or gearing replacement rather than a new door.

Is a repair covered by a guarantee?

Repairs are guaranteed on the work carried out and the parts supplied. The 10-year comprehensive insurance-backed guarantee applies to full installations.

What guarantee comes with a repair?

All of our installations carry a 10-year comprehensive insurance-backed guarantee underwritten through InstallSure. Replacement glazing is also covered by a FENSA certificate, so there is no council notification for you to arrange.

Is the survey really free?

Yes. The survey is free and carries no obligation. We measure, discuss the options and send a written quotation; if it is not for you, that is the end of it.

Which areas do you cover?

We work from South Godstone across Surrey, Sussex, Kent and South London, with Godstone, Redhill, Reigate, Sevenoaks and Crawley as our core territory. Our trade counter is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
