An insulated roof replaces the glazed or polycarbonate panels with an insulated build-up, usually with a plastered or panelled ceiling inside. The change to the room is immediate: stable temperatures, almost no rain noise and a space that behaves like the rest of the house.

Roof lights are normally designed into the layout so the room keeps its daylight. The existing frames and base must be capable of carrying the additional weight, which is the first thing we check at survey.

Modern glass roof systems with solar control and self-cleaning coatings perform enormously better than the glass of twenty years ago. They keep the open, light feeling of a conservatory while reducing the heat gain that makes older glass roofs unbearable in summer.

Glass is the right choice where daylight into the room, or into the house behind it, is the priority and where the structure will carry the weight.

Current multi-wall polycarbonate is lighter and cheaper than glass and is a reasonable choice for porches, carports and outbuildings, or where budget is the deciding factor. It will not give you the year-round comfort of an insulated roof, and we will say so rather than let you replace one unusable room with another.
